Finding the right activity for you
Joining a new team, class or group is a great way to stay active. Before you get started, it’s important to make sure it’s safe and right for you.
Joining a new activity - Staying safe
If you’d like to join a new team, class or group, there are a few simple things you can do to make sure it’s safe and right for you.
Your safety checklist
✅ Are the teachers or leaders DBS checked?
This means they’ve had a background check to work safely with young people.
✅ Do they have the right insurance?
This helps make sure everyone is protected if something goes wrong.
✅ Are they trained in first aid?
So they know what to do if someone gets hurt.
✅ Do they have a safeguarding policy?
This shows they take safety and wellbeing seriously.
✅ Are they trained to support any needs you have?
For example, if you have a disability or health condition.
If you’re not sure about any of these, it’s ok to ask! A good group will be happy to answer your questions.
Is it right for me?
Think about what you need to feel supported and comfortable:
✅ Are the leaders friendly and welcoming?
✅ Can they support any health conditions or disabilities you may have?
✅ Do they offer taster sessions so you can try it first?
✅ Do they have experience with people of your age or ability level?
It’s ok to ask questions and you can get in touch in advance to speak to the session leader. A good activity leader will be happy to talk to you and understand your needs.
